Effects of phase duration on detection of electrical stimulation of the human cochlea.
Detection thresholds for biphasic symmetric pulses were measured in fourteen human subjects implanted with the Cochlear Corporation Nucleus 22 Implant. The effects of phase duration on thresholds were studied using single pulses, and 500 ms pulse trains at 100 pps. Psychophysical detection thresholds decreased as a function of phase duration with a change in slope at approximately 0.5 ms/phase....
متن کاملElectrical Stimulation of Spiral Ganglion Cells in the Human Cochlea: A 3D Model
Electrical stimulation of auditory nerve fibers by cochlear implant electrodes has been an approved clinical practice to restore the hearing sensation in profoundly deaf people. Profound deafness is largely attributed to the loss of hair cells and subsequent decay of peripheral processes of auditory nerve fibers in the cochlea. In such pathological condition, spiral ganglion cells (SGN) which a...
متن کاملMethodological Dimensions of Transcranial Brain Stimulation with the Electrical Current in Human
Transcranial current stimulation (TCS) is a neuromodulation method in which the patient is exposed to a mild electric current (direct or alternating) at 1-2 mA, resulting in an increase or a decrease in the brain excitability. This modi.cation in neural activities can be used as a method for functional human brain mapping with causal inferences. This method might also facilitate the treatments ...
متن کاملThe histopathological effects of chronic electrical stimulation of the cat cochlea.
The success of a cochlear implant depends on stimulating an adequate number of viable spiral ganglion cells. The effect of chronic electrical stimulation on ganglion cells is therefore an important consideration when assessing the effectiveness and safety of such a device. The histopathological assessment of chronic unstimulated intracochlear electrodes is now well documented (Simmons, 1967; Cl...
متن کاملPattern electrical stimulation of the human retina
Experiments were conducted to study if electrical stimulation of the retinal surface can elicit visual sensation in individuals blind from end-stage retinitis pigmentosa (RP) or age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Under local anesthesia, different stimulating electrodes were inserted through the eyewall and positioned over the surface of the retina. Subjects' psychophysical responses to ele...
